The Masterpiece is over 40% stronger on ultimate strength tests than the strongest production seatposts on the market. Masterpiece posts weigh approximately 40 grams less than the same size Elite post. This weight reduction is accomplished while maintaining the strength and durability expected of a Thomson seatpost. Thomson accomplishes this weight reduction by machining the seatpost all over, including the oval inner diameter. We are able to hold closer tolerances by machining than by extrusion alone. Machining over an already beautiful design makes the Masterpiece Seatpost a work of art.
Certified to: EN 14766 2006 MTB.
The tube and head of the Thomson Masterpiece seatpost is integral-machined from one piece of high strength 7000 series aluminum. The head is not pressed or bonded in. This allows for superior strength and minimum weight.
We have a long 1.614 inch (41 mm) seat rail grip length. This helps prevent seat rail bending from impact loads. Most other seatposts have grip lengths of at least .500 inches shorter than our grip length.
The Thomson Masterpiece seatpost design incorporates a bending fuse to prevent catastrophic failure. All competitive seatposts we tested failed catastrophically with the seat and clamp components, and sometimes pieces of the tube and head flew off in all directions.
The Thomson Masterpiece seatpost has a clamp, head, and upper tube strong enough to withstand 325 foot-lbs of torque. The tube will start to yield and bend at the seat tube clamp at about 230 foot-lbs of torque. Under severe impact the Thomson Masterpiece seatpost will bend slightly but allow the rider to come to a stop or continue the ride.
The Masterpiece seatpost has all parts captive and can easily be attached to a seat without dis-assembly.
Infinite tilt adjustment minus 5° and plus 29°.
Very low profile clamps means no seat interference as the swivel nuts are down between the seat rails.
The designs and materials have passed extensive life and ultimate strength tests. Our ongoing testing program ensures that every production lot of seatposts meets Thomson standards.
In what colors are Masterpiece seatposts available?
Are you going to add other colors in the near future?
No, we are not planning to add new colors.
Do you plan to make a 410mm long Masterpiece seatpost?
No. 410mm long posts are already optimized for weight. The longer post must be stronger to deal with the increased possible leverage. In other words, if we made the 410mm posts lighter they would not pass our strength tests.
I want more tilt. Will longer bolts help?
Longer bolts will not allow more tilt. Once the top clamp touches the front ear of the post there is no further tilt available. Even at full forward tilt, properly torqued, there is enough bolt engagement with the barrel nut. Do not use non-Thomson bolts on your Thomson seatpost.
What size saddle rails work with Masterpiece seatposts?
Our standard clamps work well with 7x7mm saddle rails. We have an accessory clamp kit for oversized rails up to 7x10mm.
Will carbon saddle rails work with a Masterpiece seatpost?
Yes, our clamps are very gentle to carbon saddle rails.
Can I flip my set back post around to be a “set forward” to use my road bike for triathlon?
Yes you may. You may need to turn the top clamp to face the front of the bike for saddle adjustment.
How much lighter is the Masterpiece than the Thomson Elite?
Should I grease my seatpost before installation?
A very light coat of grease is okay. Do not use anti-seize as it can cause slipping. To prevent sticking the post in the frame, remove, clean, and re-install it every 90 days. Do not use grease in a carbon fiber frame.
Is the Masterpiece strong enough to use on a Mountain Bike?
Masterpiece posts may be used for cross-country mountain biking by riders who weigh 200 pounds or less.
How many Masterpiece sizes do you plan to produce?
We offer 27.2x240 and 330, 30.9x350 and 31.6x350 Masterpiece posts. We have no plans for other sizes.
Why would I buy a Masterpiece?
The Masterpiece is for the cyclist who wants the lightest weight seatpost but still wants the safety, strength, and adjustability of a Thomson.
Is there a weight limit on the Masterpiece seatpost?
Yes, 200 pounds, or 91 kilos.
How much setback does the setback post provide and why would I buy a setback?
All our setback posts provide 16mm of setback. The setback exists to provide options for bike fit.
